Tight Rein, 2011

"With the works in the exhibition 'Tight Rein' I continue to explore the relationship between humans and animals. The central piece is based on seeing a war monument in Budapest, Hungary, depicting a crowd of Huns on their horses that are wearing bridles made of stag horns. The domestication here comes full circle for me, as the beast is tamed to become a beast in service to the human – 'Horse in Arms'.

All the other pieces, also vaguely reminiscent of other animals, bear some sort of impediment. As the ambiguous title suggests, overlooked by the regal 'couple', the sculptures are also metaphors for a universal power structure. As human animals we face similar impediments, imposed by society to keep us in place and make us play our part.

Of course, the power we exert over animals is more often then not a necessary one, just like in human relationships. Us or them - it is a basic element of life and secures our very survival. I think it is important to understand the powerful beauty in the tension of human and animal relationships."
